The following six letter writing tips are furnished courtesy of the California Sierra Club:
1. Make your letter one page or less, and only cover one subject in each letter.
2. Tell why you, personally, are for or against the issue.
3. Be clear and concise.
4. Ask specifically for a "yes" or "no" vote.
5. Write as an individual. It is better not to mention your environmental group affiliation - the legislator already knows the group's position, as a result of lobbying efforts of your group.
6. When you get a response, write a follow-up letter to re- emphasize your position and give your reaction to your legislator's response. Thank your legislators when they vote the way you asked them to. ***
